چکیده

Recent studies disclose that maximizing the minimum margin like support vector machines does not necessarily lead to better generalization performances, and instead, it is crucial to optimize the margin distribution. Although it has been shown that for binary classification, characterizing the margin distribution by the firstand second-order statistics can achieve superior performance. It still remains open for multiclass classification, and due to the complexity of margin for multi-class classification, optimizing its distribution by mean and variance can also be difficult. In this paper, we propose mcODM (multi-class Optimal margin Distribution Machine), which can solve this problem efficiently. We also give a theoretical analysis for our method, which verifies the significance of margin distribution for multi-class classification. Empirical study further shows that mcODM always outperforms all four versions of multi-class SVMs on all experimental data sets.

Soft Margin Bayes-Point-Machine Classification via Adaptive Direction Sampling

Supervised machine learning is an important building block for many applications that involve data processing and decision making. Good classifiers are trained to produce accurate predictions on a training set while also generalizing well to unseen data. To this end, Bayes-PointMachines (bpm) were proposed in the past as a generalization of margin maximizing classifiers, such as Support-Vector-...

Generalized Maximal Margin Discriminant Analysis for Speech Emotion Recognition

A novel speech emotion recognition method based on the generalized maximummargin discriminant analysis (GMMDA) method is proposed in this paper. GMMDA is a multi-class extension of our proposed two-class dimensionality reduction method based on maximum margin discriminant analysis (MMDA), which utilizes the normal direction of optimal hyperplane of linear support vector machine (SVM) as the pro...

Optimizing kernel parameters by second-order methods

Radial basis function network (RBF) kernels are widely used for support vector machines (SVMs). But for model selection of an SVM, we need to optimize the kernel parameter and the margin parameter by time-consuming cross validation. In this paper we propose determining parameters for RBF and Mahalanobis kernels by maximizing the class separability by the second-order optimization. For multi-cla...

Optimal Margin Distribution Clustering

Maximum margin clustering (MMC), which borrows the large margin heuristic from support vector machine (SVM), has achieved more accurate results than traditional clustering methods. The intuition is that, for a good clustering, when labels are assigned to different clusters, SVM can achieve a large minimum margin on this data. Recent studies, however, disclosed that maximizing the minimum margin...

A Multi-Stage Single-Machine Replacement Strategy Using Stochastic Dynamic Programming

In this paper, the single machine replacement problem is being modeled into the frameworks of stochastic dynamic programming and control threshold policy, where some properties of the optimal values of the control thresholds are derived. Using these properties and by minimizing a cost function, the optimal values of two control thresholds for the time between productions of two successive nonco...
